In a world that has lost it's reson d'etre because of the uncertainty of terrorist threats national security has become so much important, since countries and populations now face a threat that is unlike the classical threats of war and aggression of the 20-th century.
Even a superpower like the United States, which had the monetary and human resources to establish one of the best national security policies had to think twice after the events of 9/11. It is said that national security, which is based mostly on intelligence gathering and preemptive measures against real or presumed enemies is an expensive endeavor. However, some countries prove by their actions that even small nations can go a long way in terms of defending themselves by depending more on their human resources alone.
I come from an academic background that is grounded in history and political science. However, I have had the fortune of being involved in journalistic endeavors as well. I feel myself equally at home in both fields. Furthermore, the Internet has given people an enormous ability to make their words heard. By utilizing the web and the mediums it presents, I will try to devote this blog to national security issues on the Middle East and the Caucasus. Some of these countries are regional superpowers such as Iran, Turkey, Egypt, while others are smaller entities that operate as satellites of the regional powers.
The geographic area that this endeavor undertakes is a large one. It includes almost the majority of the Arab states and Israel, as well as the newly established republics of Georgia, Armenian, and Azerbaijan in the Caucasus.
If we also consider that these nations are themselves intertwined into political, military, and strategic alliances with super powers like the United States, Russia and others, it becomes clear how complex and problematic national security issues becomes in the area under our purview.
I will publish my blog on a weekly basis as a start. I will have my first posting next week.
Thus I am embarking on a journey that is interesting, complex, and dangerous at the same time. I hope that my postings might bring you some analytical and thought provoking material.
